  • Going Green: 5 Outstanding Vegetarian Restaurants in Singapore

If you think vegetarian food is just about salads and unimaginatively grilled vegetables, there is a growing number of restaurants in Singapore that has elevated vegetarian cuisine, with inventive meatless meals that would satisfy the palate of any discerning diner, vegetarian or not. From the rustic to the refined, there is a green option to satisfy any craving (and any budget) you have.

    Fusion Vegetarian - Whole Earth
Peranakan cuisine is the cuisine that defines Singapore, born from the kitchens of Chinese immigrants who intermingled with local Malays. It is a cuisine of rich and complex flavours, and Whole Earth has adapted these time-honoured recipes with a vegetarian twist, throwing in some Thai influence along the way

Substitution is key; solid chunks of soy and mushroom take the place of meat, allowing the dishes to retain their texture without much reinterpretation.

Bun Me Up, Scotty – Vegan Burg
Sometimes the body just craves a big, juicy burger; a wündermeal that packs all the food groups between two buns. Vegetarians need not miss out on one of life’s greatest edible pleasures with Vegan Burg. No animal content – not even milk or eggs – is present in its kitchen.

Patties here are made from a melange of vegetables, soy, legumes, tofu or nuts. Combined with other ingredients, they yield interesting burgers from the traditional (Mustang Relish, Smoky BBQ) to the adapted (Char-Grilled Satay, Tangy Tartar).

The Little Shop of Growers – Veggie Cottage
Unassuming and unpretentious, Veggie Cottage is a relative newcomer to the vegetarian scene, though it has already made a name for itself with its simple, straightforward menu of local and Western dishes.

For lunch, the menu veers East – highlights being a vegetarian Nasi Lemak with mock fish, chicken rice and laksa. For dinner, it heads West, with Veggie Cottage’s very popular fish & chips, pasta aglio olio and cottage pie all getting a thumbs-up.

From the Soil with Love – Loving Hut
The enthusiasm at Loving Hut is palpable. Its slogan ‘Be Vegan, Make Peace’ is undeniably upbeat and it has even developed its own vocabulary. Prong refers to its vegan prawns, tunna is their moniker for vegan tuna and chickin is – as you would have guessed - vegan chicken.

How Does Your Garden of Eden Grow? – Original Sin
Many vegetarian restaurants in Asia deploy the art of deception. That is to say, they replace meat with mock vegetarian meat, preserving the integrity of the recipe but with a green twist. Original Sin, however, celebrates the vegetable. It does not attempt to disguise its produce as “meat” – instead, it puts vegetables front and centre, letting them shine on the plate in their all their natural glory.

For starters, the Principessa Salad, squeaky Haloumi and the Mezze Platter are great. For the mains, try the Spanakopita, Vegetable Tandoori and especially their risotto. Finish off with the Tiramisu or the Apple Crumble.
